Ankle sprain

Mechanism:
  • Ankle is suddenly twisted by pivoting on grass, turf, or a court, or stepping on an uneven surface.
  • Wearing shoes that don't fit well or don't have proper support.

Symptoms:
Symptoms usually occur within the first few minutes of the injury.
  • pain
  • swelling
  • hearing a popping sound when the injury occurs
  • bruising
  • instability
  • tenderness

Diagnosis:
Depending on the grade of the sprain (grade 1, 2, or 3) you may need an x-ray of your ankle so the doctor can rule determine if the ankle has also been fractured.

Treatment/rehabilitation:
  • rest
  • ice 20 minutes 4-8 times per day
  • compression
  • elevation

Prevention:
  • Wear shoes with proper support
  • If you have experienced ankle sprains in the past, you should wear ankle support braces to stabilize the ankle
