Ankle sprain
Mechanism:
Symptoms:
Symptoms usually occur within the first few minutes of the injury.
Diagnosis:
Depending on the grade of the sprain (grade 1, 2, or 3) you may need an x-ray of your ankle so the doctor can rule determine if the ankle has also been fractured.
Treatment/rehabilitation:
Prevention:
- Ankle is suddenly twisted by pivoting on grass, turf, or a court, or stepping on an uneven surface.
- Wearing shoes that don't fit well or don't have proper support.

- swelling
- hearing a popping sound when the injury occurs
- bruising
- instability
- tenderness

- rest
- ice 20 minutes 4-8 times per day
- compression
- elevation
Prevention:
- Wear shoes with proper support
- If you have experienced ankle sprains in the past, you should wear ankle support braces to stabilize the ankle
